Victoria, growing by design
Since opening its doors in 1887, Victorians have seen more than a century of growth, commitment, hard work and vision produce a global university of technology with an outstanding reputation for design in areas such as the creative arts, fashion, architecture and engineering along with technology, communications, sciences and education.
As the university’s reputation continues to grow internationally, locally our strength in design heralds relationships sought by industry and government requiring a partner with the expertise to advise, consult and work with on projects critical to the future development and infrastructure of the State.
In July 2007, the Victorian Government, through the Department of Industry, Innovation and Regional Development (DIIRD), appointed RMIT University to collaboratively deliver, during the next four years, three key initiatives that form part of the Government’s A$15 million Design Victoria Strategy.
RMIT’s Design Victoria Team are working with industry and the design sector to build capability, raise awareness and develop new markets through the Design Ready, Business Ready and Design Knowledge programs.
RMIT’s commitment to design education and research, and Victoria’s design agenda, not only strengthens its position as one of Australia’s leading design institutions but also makes it the obvious choice to partner the State Government on these important initiatives.
As a university that likes to lead by example, RMIT will continue to deepen its engagement with industry through the construction of a centrepiece landmark building that will house a new Design Hub on the corner of Swanston and Victoria Streets, Carlton, and include RMIT’s Design Victoria Team, the new Design Research Institute, post-graduate education in design, exhibition space, modelling and prototyping workshops and facilities and collaboration space.
RMIT is proud to be partnering the Victorian Government in this critical strategy and looks forward to playing its part in helping Victoria’s design sector grow.
