Principles of D4S feature
Design for Sustainability is about designing products in a way that reduces their environmental impact. The aim is to design products that are functional, cost effective, and have no harmful side effects for human health or the environment. For a sustainable future it is imperative that good design addresses environmental objectives.
Four strategies of D4S products
- Efficient design: keep the material and resource inputs to a minimum. Do more with less.
- Cyclic design: design to enable materials to be continuously cycled through natural or industrial systems.
- Safe design: avoid toxic and hazardous substances and processes. Keep human health in mind as well as ecological impacts.
- Communication: ensure product and packaging related communications are informative and accurate. Encourage responsible consumer behaviour.
