Design: Part of the Problem or Part of the Solution?

Sustainable Living Festival

Seminar overview

Design and business have an uneasy relationship with the ecological crisis; it is seen as a double edged sword. On the one hand, design for sustainability is concerned with the consequence of a consumer society; whilst on the other, design has been responsible for inflating it. Thus it is a ‘challenging subject to come to grips with’ (Moggridge 2007, p.656).

This seminar will illustrate how design is implicated in contributing to the ecological crisis, as well as the opportunities that designers and business may engage with to be at the forefront of design for sustainability.

The seminar will be supported with practical case studies of successful eco-design and sustainable design solutions.
