Matthew Herbert and Lucinda Mason founded Herbert + Mason in 2005. Both Matthew and Lucinda are honours graduates from RMIT, and studied Architecture also in Japan and Denmark. They have received several commendations and awards for their work and studies, this year winning the Retail Interior Design Award for the Ksubi flagship store and were shortlisted for the Claude Maus Flagship store.

Despite being a young practise, they have grown consistently in scale and reputation due to their approach and extensive experience in projects of varying scales and program, from urban design to product design both here and overseas.

Their work has been published both here and overseas including Monument, Frame, Monster Mag, Harpers Bazaar, Vogue and Vogue living and featured in publications from Spain, Korea, Japan and Germany. Currently the practice has several new projects in Australia and will be heading to Japan, New York and London later this year for commercial, hospitality and residential projects. They have worked with several fashion labels and retailers including including Scanlan & Theodore, Ksubi, Claude Maus, Maus Cat Berlin, Fat52, Nique, Roy, Urban Attitude, Provider trainers, and Globe retail concepts. Current projects include a Laneway Rejuvenation Proposal for Crossley Street, Ginger Boy level 01, Melbourne Centre of Contemporary Culture and numerous retailing projects and strategies.

Matthew is co-founder and director of Herbert + Mason. Matthew has a degree in Architecture from RMIT University and has also studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art, Copenhagen and at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan in the fields of education, urban design, and master planning under Jun Aoki, Yoshiharu Tsukamoto (Atelier Bow-Wow). Prior to Herbert + Mason, Matthew worked as a project and design architect for some of Australia’s most significant cultural and civic buildings including Federation Square and the innovative and award-winning Australian Wildlife Centre at Healesville Sanctuary. Matthew also worked in Denmark on several residential and commercial projects. Matthew lectures and tutors in the fields of design, computing and communications part-time at RMIT University.

Lucinda Mason

BDesign

Lucinda is co-founder of Herbert + Mason. Lucinda studied both Architecture and Interior Design at RMIT University and has studied in Denmark at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts focusing on urban design and master planning. While in Denmark she worked on a variety of residential projects and civic buildings. Lucinda has worked on a large range and scope of projects in both Private and Public / Government realm, and currently works on the new Melbourne Convention Centre, one of the largest Public Private Partnerships in Australia for NWHB. Aside from architecture, Lucinda has had extensive experience within the design and fashion industry and also lectures and tutors in the fields of design and communications part-time at RMIT University.
