Michael Spencer
CEO - Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)


Michael Spencer is actively involved in the development and management of environmental verification and labeling programs. He is the founding Chief Executive of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) in Australia; a founding Director of the Water Stewardship Initiative (WSI), and; a founding member of the international Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS). He has provided consultancy services to organizations such as the International Social and Environmental Accreditation and Labeling Alliance (ISEAL) and the International Responsible Mine Assurance Program (IRMA). He consults to business on organizational strategy and reputation management and is a Senior Associate of the National Institute of Economic and Industry Research (NIEIR) advising on economic and public policy issues.

Previously he worked as Head of Marketing and Communication for FSC International in Bonn, Germany. Prior to that he was the Vice President Communication for BHP Billiton and he was the first Head of Corporate Social Responsibility for National Australia Bank. He has worked as an Adviser to the Premier of Victoria (Australia), General Manager of the National Institute of Economic and Industry Research and as a senior journalist for Australia’s Seven and Nine television networks. He holds a BA from the University of Melbourne and has post-graduate qualifications in management and public policy.
