Tim Grant completed a Bachelor of Applied Science in Environmental Management at DeakinUniversity before undertaking a Masters in Cleaner production at RMITUniversity. He studied part time through both degrees working full time as a technician in minerals processing research with Comalco and then CSRIO. In 1995 he began working at Monash University in the Centre for Innovation in Waste Management before moving to the Centre for Design in 1996.
With a background in minerals process engineering, and being the closest thing to an engineer in the centre at the time, he took over the Life Cycle Assessment program, first developing inventory databases for LCA, then applying them across a broad range of sectors including fuels, appliances, waste management and building materials. With an interest in building capacity in life cycle assessment, he also developed LCA courses and helped with the organisation of the second National LCA conference in 2000, becoming founding president of the Australian LCA Society in 2002.
Research projects in the past 3 years have expanded to include the development of Ecological Footprint calculators for the Victorian Environment Protection Authority and the integration of LCA, input-output analysis and ecological footprints in analysing the ecological footprint of a new ‘environmentally sustainable’ housing development at Aurora in the north of Melbourne.
He is currently working on the integration of LCA data with materials flow modelling for the built environment and the development of impact assessment methods for the Australian environment. Tim is currently working with the CSIRO.
