Take a tour of the prestigious 2008 Premier's Design Awards in the Virtual Pavilion
Set up in the ‘virtual’ space on your computer, between the Melbourne Museum and the Melbourne Exhibition Buildings, the amazing ‘Virtual Pavilion’ designed by Tom Kovac in partnership with the Design Research Institute at RMIT, will guide you through the award winning entries of the prestigious Premier’s Design Marks as part of the State of Design Festival 2008.
Premier’s Design Mark recipients are designers and practices that have developed their skills and their creative processes to respond to the new, more demanding market conditions, producing exemplary approaches and outcomes that are perceived by the profession, clients and the community as a contribution to a sustainable future.
The awards identify and recognise Victorian design practices and professionals who deliver exceptional design across 11 categories including; interior, graphic, multimedia, landscape, set and textile design. Design quality is assessed by function, material, space and aesthetics that deliver value, provokes delight and anticipates our rapidly changing social and environmental conditions. This comprehensive list demonstrates the breadth of design skills and talent within Victoria.
Within each category, submissions could be made in commercial, cultural or self-initiated classes.
Commercial implies a project that has been privately commissioned for use within a business or commercial process. This includes commercial buildings, commercial interiors, commercially motivated products, graphic solutions for business, craft based products for multiple production and retail sale.
Cultural implies a project that is designed for use, exhibition or deployment in the public realm, for general public use or consumption – either as a community resource, an institution or a public commercial product/space.
Self-initiated implies that the entry has not been commissioned by a client for commercial purposes, but is generated by the designer (entrant) as a speculation, case study, exploration, or entrepreneurial idea that is mainly held within a non-commercial sphere.
The Premier’s Design Awards are a biennial awards program developed by the Victorian State Government. The awards recognise design practice excellence in Victoria and promote the value of outstanding design to business and the public both locally and internationally.
The official Premier’s Design Awards 2008 Exhibition is at the Melbourne Museum until 3 August.
