Protect Your Creative

A guide to Intellectual Property for Australia’s Graphic Designers

A first for the graphic design industry, Protect Your Creative was developed in partnership with IP Australia, AGDA and IP specialist lawyers. This publication aims to equip graphic designers with the necessary information to protect and profit from their IP and covers key content including:

  • ID Your IP
  • From Mind to Market
  • Enforcement Issues
  • End to End Checklist
  • Useful Contacts
  • IP Glossary.

The ARC Centre of Excellence in Creative Industries and Innovation estimated that in 2006 over half a million Australians were employed in the creative industries. Of the approximate 76,350 people working in design roles in Victoria, the visual communication discipline is the largest group by sector and consultancy/in-house. Protect Your Creative contains practical information to help those working in this growing, economically important sector, understand IP and use this knowledge to make informed IP business decisions.

Jim Antonopoulos, Creative Director of brand agency TANK, and council member of the Australian Graphic Design Association (AGDA) said that it is also important that graphic designers understand the implications of IP when working with clients. “As graphic designers we hold a great deal of responsibility in creating the IP for our clients. It would be a waste for us not to know how to protect them. Working with an experienced IP lawyer and integrating their processes into our process is mandatory – this is especially true for naming and brand identity programs."

Design Victoria would like to acknowledge the working group for their contribution of both their time and expertise in developing Protect Your Creative – A guide to Intellectual Property for Australia’s Graphic Designers:

  • Kara Macleod – Design Victoria
  • Jackie Hayward, Dana Busic and John Jenkins - IP Australia
